Dutch-Inspired Dill Pickle Soup

Here’s a Dutch-inspired Dill Pickle Soup recipe that incorporates some of the delicious products available at Karl’s Meats. This hearty and tangy soup is perfect for chilly days and pairs beautifully with Dutch cheeses and meats.

Serves 4-6


Ingredients:

4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

2 cups diced potatoes (peeled)

1 cup grated Saputo Marbled Cheddar (available at Karl’s Meats)

1 cup finely chopped dill pickles (plus ½ cup pickle brine)

1 cup shredded Oma’s Ham (available at Karl’s Meats)

1 cup diced carrots

1 cup diced celery

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup heavy cream or whole milk

2 tbsp butter

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

1 tsp dried dill (or 1 tbsp fresh dill)

1 tsp smoked paprika (optional, for a Dutch twist)

Salt and pepper to taste


Optional garnish: Sliced Lyoner Sausage (available at Karl’s Meats), extra grated cheese, and fresh dill.

 

Instructions:

Sauté the Base: In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, carrots, and celery. Sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.


Add Potatoes and Broth: Stir in the diced potatoes and broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes.


Thicken the Soup: In a small bowl, whisk the flour with ¼ cup of water until smooth. Slowly stir into the soup to thicken.


Add Pickles and Brine: Stir in the chopped dill pickles and pickle brine. This adds the signature tangy flavor!


Incorporate Meat and Cheese: Add the shredded Oma’s Ham and grated Saputo Marbled Cheddar. Stir until the cheese is melted and the soup is creamy.


Finish with Cream and Seasoning: Pour in the heavy cream or milk. Add dried dill, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for another 5 minutes.


Serve: Ladle the soup into bowls. Garnish with sliced Lyoner Sausage, extra grated cheese, and fresh dill for a Dutch-inspired touch.


 

Pairing Suggestions:

Serve with a side of sourdough bread or kaiser buns from Karl’s Meats for dipping.


Add a small charcuterie board featuring Henri Willig Kass Spiced Gouda and German Salami for a complete Dutch-inspired meal.
